Electronic Musician Zoë Nowak Speaking With Students, Performing Two Shows Saturday
Electronic musician Zoë Nowak is spending the week with Texas A&M University’s School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts, talking with students in several classes and performing two shows on Saturday, April 1.
Nowak’s appearance, titled “Bridging Sound, Movement and Visuals as a Transgender Artist,” is made possible by an interdisciplinary grant from the school.
Nowak will speak with students in Electronic Composition (PERF 318) and Time Based Media I (VIZA 643) on Monday; Dance Production (DCED 203), Queer Theory (WGST 445) and History of Electronic Music (PERF 228) Tuesday; and Performances in World Cultures (PERF 301) and History of Rock (PERF 226) on Wednesday, along with the Transcend student group on Tuesday and Thursday.
The Saturday performances, which will feature music, visualization and dance students, are at 6 and 8 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre in the Liberal Arts and Humanities Building. Admission is free.
Dr. Will Connor, who teaches Electronic Composition, said he is “extremely excited” to help host Nowak’s appearance.
“The opportunity being afforded my Electronic Composition students will be invaluable to help them understand the instruments for which they are writing new works, as well as give them additional performing experience with a professional musician,” he said. “This expands to the dancers and visual artists involved as well. Furthermore, her contact with the students in my classes and many other courses will expose them to creative endeavors as informed by daily and academic life, truly enriching their university learning.
“It’s a very special opportunity that is thrilling and inspiring, and the support from colleagues and the school has been overwhelmingly amazing. It’s a fantastic start to what I hope is a long series of similar events and student engagement via our school and the university.”
