Explore Computing in the Arts

At Texas A&M University

Technology is deeply rooted in the mission of the College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts, giving our students a foundation in innovation and expertise in digital literacy. Computing methods are the building blocks that make this possible. Through programming, artificial intelligence, machine learning and human-computer interaction, artists have new opportunities and tools for creation. A college goal is that all students graduate with a digital/computing literacy and competency beyond the standard for degrees in the visual and performing arts.

Innovation Among Artistic Disciplines

Throughout all of our disciplines, computing plays a vital role. Our faculty members are artists, technologists, performers, designers and humanists, exploring areas including performance analysis, digital content creation, immersive environments, real-time simulations and the theories of why and how computing impacts the arts.

In visualization, for example, computing is used to create graphics for digital assets and 3D models essential for virtual reality and virtual production. They are the key component in video game design and development, from programming how a game operates to creating pathfinding algorithms to move characters through a game’s landscape.

Dancers can use motion-capture systems to see an interactive visualization of their movements in real time, and use computing methods to track and analyze those movements. Programmers build tools for musicians to create and perform, and algorithms generate new sounds and techniques to evaluate musical structure and data.

The theatre world benefits from computing through set and lighting design. Through artificial intelligence, designers can generate images of a set, while a virtual reality model invites collaborators to explore the space and simulate lighting and sound. Immersive theatre employs augmented and virtual reality to create virtual environments for the viewer.

Visualization

Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science in Visualization integrates technical prowess with visual artistry. Students become technical artists through studio-based classes that integrate fine arts, three-dimensional design and digital technology.

We offer an environment for students who want to explore and gain expertise in transformational applications of computing methods to the arts. Here at the College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts, we are defining the emerging uses of technology in the arts and putting those ideas and opportunities in the hands of our students.
