BIOGRAPHY
Anna Holman is an instructional assistant professor of Performance Studies and Theatre at the Texas A&M College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts. Holman, who uses the pronoun they, has research interests including the performance of gender in climbing; transgender and nonbinary athletes; outdoor adventure sports; and the performance of wilderness across visual and aesthetic performance mediums.
Their current book project, “Climbing Culture, Gender and the Body” (forthcoming from Routledge), looks at cultural narratives and gender in the climbing body. This monograph provides a performance analysis of how climbing bodies conform to the heroic, white, masculine “ideal,” leading to the valorization of death, conquest and unsustainable diet and exercise practices.
Holman has previously published in The Mountain and the Politics of Representation; Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies; and The Drama Review, and has a forthcoming publication in an edited collection on wilderness and performance. Holman has presented at numerous conferences on such topics as climbing, identity, intercultural theatre and pedagogy.
