Dance Science Students To Present New Works During Choreography Showcase
Dance Science students will present 14 new choreographic works during the sold-out Student Choreography Showcase on Friday and Saturday.
Sixty students will perform at the Black Box Theater in the Physical Education Activity Program Building, presenting modern, contemporary, jazz, musical theatre, ballet and tap dances.
John Cartwright, lecturer and faculty mentor for the showcase, said he is excited to see the students’ artistic voices come to life. He said each choreographer worked diligently and thoughtfully with their cast members.
“They have made work that is very representative of their lives and experiences as students,” Cartwright said. “It is exciting to see them tap into the creative joy of making dance as well as pushing themselves outside their comfort zones.”
Sommer Edgerson, senior, choreographed a contemporary jazz piece that addresses themes of isolation and fluidity. Lenzy Zettler, senior, choreographed a contemporary duet that explores musicality and connection between dancers.
Bailey Zettler, senior and committee member for the event, said she is eager to perform with her classmates and showcase their choreography.
“This show is such an amazing opportunity for students to create and share with others,” she said. “I know that everyone has been working very hard.”
Cartwright commended the student leadership committees that have brought the show to life. These works have been in development since the fall semester, and he hopes students feel encouraged to continue developing their skills.
“They’ve taken on a big responsibility because many of them are also choreographing and performing in the show,” he said. “So, it’s something they’ve taken ownership of, and they worked hard to produce their own work.”
