Where Music Meets Innovation

The Music Performance degree fosters a stylistically open approach by blending technical instruction, individualized mentoring and professional development training. This includes developing new and creative ways of thinking about performance; innovative ways of integrating music performance in social engagements; and creative concepts of music performance and technology. We actively explore music’s vibrant connection with dance, theatre, visual arts and emerging fields like game design.

Students can develop technical proficiency in performance through individual lessons and ensemble participation. Individual performance instruction courses are offered in brass; composition; electronic music; guitar; percussion; strings; voice; and woodwind. Our performance ensembles specialize in experimental and improvised music; guitar; steel pan; opera and musical theatre; percussion; trombone; and video game and film music.

Coursework includes performance training, collaboration, music technology, music history, global studies and business/entrepreneurship.

An in-depth understanding of the visual and performing arts can also be developed through the Performance and Visual Studies program, including ethnomusicology, media studies and sound studies. Interdisciplinary coursework and the college’s rich performance schedule provide a broad foundation of knowledge.
