LASER Talk Series: Avital Meshi

The Institute for Applied Creativity presents this series as part of the international Leonardo/ISAST LASER network. It features interdisciplinary speakers across arts, sciences, humanities and technology each month at the J. Wayne Stark Galleries in the Memorial Student Center.

Philippe Pasquier, Feb. 19 at noon: The professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology directs the Metacreation Lab for Creative AI. His research and creative practice focus on generative systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning and computational creativity, bridging scientific research, creative software development and interactive art. 

Patricia Olynyk, March 18 at noon: The interdisciplinary artist explores how science, technology and institutional systems shape our understanding of the body and the world around us. Olynyk is the Florence and Frank Bush Professor of Art and the inaugural director of the Graduate School of Art at Washington University in St. Louis, with additional appointments in medicine, public health and the humanities. She co-directs the Leonardo/ISAST NY LASER Talks program.

Avital Meshi, April 15 at noon: This new media and performance artist’s work explores AI’s impact on human identity and social interaction. Using interactive technologies and wearables, she creates performances and installations that engage viewers with AI in playful, critical ways. Meshi is pursuing a Ph.D. in Performance Studies at UC Davis, with a designated emphasis in Science and Technology Studies.
