Film Screening: ‘The Encampments’

November 17 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

The Performance and Visual Studies program presents a screening of a new documentary, “The Encampments.” This is in conjunction with the Film, Propaganda and Dissidence course, but open to the campus community with no admission fee. The film chronicles student activism at Columbia University in 2024 against the war in Gaza and the university’s financial investments in arms manufacturers who supply weapons for that war. It focuses on events through the perspectives of three students: Mahmoud Khalil, who is of Palestinian origin; Grant Miner, who is Jewish; and Sueda Polat, a human rights scholar.

The film will be followed by a discussion on the issues it addresses, including the aesthetics of activism; students’ rights and responsibilities; and the ethics and rhetorical strategies of political documentary with professors Ira Dworkin (English), Rebecca Hankins (Global Languages and Cultures) and Daniel Humphrey (Performance and Visual Studies).
