Professor and Associate Director, Ph.D. in Visual Computing and Interactive Media
BIOGRAPHY
Sabarish V. Babu is a tenured full professor of visual computing and computational media in the College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts at Texas A&M University. He also serves as the associate director of the Visual Computing and Interactive Media Ph.D. program. He and his students innovate, design, implement and evaluate immersive and interactive extended reality (XR) systems. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Babu’s research interests broadly span the areas of XR (virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality); applied perception-action and cognition in XR/visualization; education and training simulations; virtual humans and avatars; and 3D Human Computer Interaction. He and his students have published over 140 peer-reviewed papers in these
areas of research, and received eight Best Paper Awards in premier IEEE and ACM research venues. Babu has graduated 10 Ph.D. students, eight M.S. students and several undergraduate honors students in his research group.
Babu serves in leadership roles in conferences and journals related to the virtual reality research field, including the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics and MDPI Virtual Worlds journals. His research has been partially sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Department of Labor and corporate foundation awards, and industry grants from companies such as Medline, Prisma Health, Bon Secours, Adobe and BMW Inc.
Previously, Babu served as a faculty member in the School of Computing at Clemson University for 16 years, first as a tenure-track assistant professor (2010-2016), then as tenured associate professor (2016-2025), and then as tenured full professor (2025). Prior to Clemson, he served as an assistant research scientist and post-doctoral fellow (2007 to 2010) in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Iowa.
