21st Century Fan Fiction: The Music of Vocaloids and Deepfakes

Amy Skjerseth, assistant professor of popular music at the University of California, Riverside, will discuss her research on the intersections of music, media, material culture and technology. She is working on a monograph titled “Instrumental Presets: The Visible History of Music Technology,” which explores how tools ranging from 1960s transistor radios to 2000s vocaloids and 2020s deepfakes have influenced music and visual culture.
