{"id":6438,"date":"2019-09-20T09:39:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T14:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arch.tamu.edu.staging2.juiceboxint.com\/news\/2019\/09\/20\/faculty-phd-students-present-research-findings-creative-work\/"},"modified":"2022-06-15T12:48:50","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T17:48:50","slug":"faculty-phd-students-present-research-findings-creative-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/news\/2019\/09\/20\/faculty-phd-students-present-research-findings-creative-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty, Ph.D. students present research findings, creative work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A fast-paced day of research findings and creative work\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OeGHVelSydk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The great variety of research and creative work by Texas A&amp;M College of Architecture faculty and Ph.D. students was on full display at \u201cNatural, Built, Virtual,\u201d the college\u2019s annual research symposium, Sept. 16, 2019 at the university\u2019s Langford Architecture Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to fast-paced TED Talk-style presentations, faculty and Ph.D. students demonstrated interactive virtual reality projects, shared their expertise in panel discussions, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After breakfast and an opening welcome by college Dean Jorge Vanegas, the symposium began with a keynote address by Ken Smith, a corporate scientist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3m.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3M<\/a> who excels in applying new technologies in innovative ways to many different product applications. Smith explored the benefits of industry\/university partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Smith\u2019s keynote, faculty and Ph.D. students presented their research in 5-minute sessions, followed by round robin, concurrent demonstrations of research and creative projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium also included a brief lunchtime presentation by representatives from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jacobs<\/a>, a global design, engineering, construction and technical services firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur college partners with industry as they expand the frontiers of knowledge,\u201d said Dawn Jourdan, executive associate dean and chief symposium orchestrator. &#8220;These relationships are reciprocal as our industry partners challenge us to embrace boundary-expanding questions and we, in turn, work with industries to embrace new trends and transformative findings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"110\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Dawn-Jourdan.jpg\" alt=\"Dawn Jourdan\" class=\"wp-image-6440\" \/><figcaption>Dawn Jourdan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After lunch, the symposium continued with a judging session of posters describing faculty and Ph.D. student research, more TED Talk-style presentations, panel discussions and demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium closed with a 4:50 p.m. reception in the Wright Gallery, Langford A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established to underscore the influence of research on teaching and practice at the college, the symposium serves as a catalyst for research-informed teaching in the college&#8217;s degree programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, contact <a href=\"mailto:rnira@pvfa.tamu.edu\">rnira@pvfa.tamu.edu<\/a> or <a href=\"mailto:doswald@tamu.edu\">doswald@tamu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Research and creative work by Texas A&amp;M School of Performance, Visualization &amp;
