{"id":24787,"date":"2025-03-28T12:39:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T17:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/?p=24787"},"modified":"2025-03-31T17:15:02","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T22:15:02","slug":"continue-to-think-big-faculty-members-share-their-research-and-creative-works-during-annual-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/news\/2025\/03\/28\/continue-to-think-big-faculty-members-share-their-research-and-creative-works-during-annual-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Continue To Think Big&#8217;: Faculty Members Share Their Research And Creative Works During Annual Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Faculty in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/\">Texas A&amp;M College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts<\/a> showcased a wide variety of research during the 2025 Research and Creative Works Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third-annual spring symposium was held Feb. 3 at the Stella Hotel in Bryan, and included three keynote speakers and several performances by faculty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/tim-mclaughlin\/\">Dean Tim McLaughlin<\/a> said he is continuously inspired by the faculty in the college and the work they are creating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEach year I leave here thinking, \u2018I can&#8217;t wait to get back to work with this group of people,\u2019\u201d McLaughlin said. \u201cI can&#8217;t wait to see what they do in the classroom with the undergraduate and graduate students. And I can&#8217;t wait to see how they are transforming their individual disciplines and emerging disciplines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/ann-mcnamara\/\">Dr. Ann McNamara<\/a>, professor and associate dean for research and creative works, emphasized the college\u2019s impact on research and collaboration. She emboldened the faculty to \u201ccontinue to think big,\u201d and said she hoped they would find collaborators and spark new ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re such an interdisciplinary college,\u201d McNamara said. \u201cThis day is an opportunity for people to think about who they might like to work with, and what kind of projects they can imagine that might not be possible in other colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Research and Creative Works Day 2025\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K0EGg7SSH_w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Video by Justin Kling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-faculty-presentations\">Faculty Presentations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/jong-in-lee\/\">Dr. Jong-in Lee<\/a>, assistant professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/academics\/disciplines\/visualization\/\">Visualization<\/a>, discussed his virtual reality research. Photo by Justin Kling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/andee-scott\/\">Andee Scott<\/a>, associate professor in Dance Science, presented her collaborative dance project titled \u201cIt\u2019s Not About the Content: Nonstopping with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jeaninedurning.com\/?page_id=50\">Jeanine Durning<\/a>.\u201d Durning, a choreographer based in New York, and Scott have been researching &#8220;nonstopping&#8221; in practice together since 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott said the 45-minute performance is a complex improvisation score. She said they track what is happening in their bodies and the timing of their movements through situational movement and speaking scores. The goal is not to do it right, but to make it through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is not about content, it\u2019s about what gets revealed by trying to do the content,\u201d she said. \u201cIt reveals attention \u2014 it is tracking where attention goes: the performer\u2019s attention, the audience\u2019s attention. So, it\u2019s not about the dance, it\u2019s about what happens as I try to keep never stopping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following her presentation, Scott invited the audience to play an interactive sensory game, lining the attendees in the center of the room for an exercise in tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience members were tasked with creating a two-count gesture with their right hand and then repeating it in four counts. Photo by Justin Kling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/kim-kattari\/\">Dr. Kim Kattari<\/a>, associate professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/academics\/disciplines\/performance-studies\/\">Performance and Visual Studies<\/a>, discussed her research about musical experiences leading to transformative change. She shared her experience interviewing attendees at electronic music festivals and how she collected feedback from their involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs an ethnomusicologist, I am interested in how music plays a really vital part in people\u2019s lives,\u201d she said. \u201cAt these events, I am trying to document the impact of meaningful experiences in electronic music communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/rebecca-hays\/\">Dr. Rebecca Hays<\/a>, associate professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/academics\/disciplines\/music-performance\/\">Music Performance<\/a>, discussed her research in vocal health and vocal vitality, which aims to rebuild singing voices. Hays said she is conducting a music medicine project with scientists and doctors to show singing\u2019s effect on the vagus nerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour vagus nerve controls all of your big metabolic functions,\u201d Hays said. \u201cThis study aims to prove that through singing you increase your vagal tone, which in succession will increase your ability to have a better heart rate variation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/staff\/michael-poblete\/\">Dr. Mike Poblete<\/a>, instructional assistant professor in Theatre, discussed his new book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/books\/mono\/10.4324\/9781003600848\/student-agency-devised-theatre-education-mike-poblete\">Student Agency in Devised Theatre Education: Creating Collaborative Theatre in Virtual and In-Person Classrooms<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devised theatre is the process of creating a play without a completed text at the beginning. Poblete said his book looks at process-oriented devised theatre, and the role of student agency in classrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2021, as part of my dissertation research at the University of Hawai&#8217;i, I developed a devised theatre project with the drama class at Waipahu High School,\u201d Poblete said. \u201cThe purpose was to assess whether as a result of engaging in devised theatre, the students experienced any shifts in their outlooks on learning and their sense of self-agency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poblete will also discuss the book during a panel discussion on April 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Liberal Arts and Arts and Humanities Building. Photo by Justin Kling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollishammonds.com\/About\">Hollis Hammonds<\/a>, a multimedia artist who will be joining the faculty in the fall, creates work surrounding memory, social issues and disasters in the Midwest and the South. She presented several art projects which included a solo exhibit titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollishammonds.com\/Blanket-of-Fog\">Blanket of Fog<\/a>\u201d about a fire that destroyed her childhood home; and an exhibition and collaboration with poet Sasha West titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollishammonds.com\/A-Dark-Wood-Grew-Inside-Me-1\">A Dark Wood Grew Inside Me<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am devoted to drawing in all forms, including sculptural, installation and spatial forms, as well as performance and time-based,\u201d Hammonds said. \u201cI am also very interested in immersive installations where the viewer can go and feel that life-size quality to have a physical reaction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HollisHammonds1156--1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"HollisHammonds1156 \" class=\"wp-image-24791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HollisHammonds1156--1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HollisHammonds1156--300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HollisHammonds1156--768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/HollisHammonds1156-.jpg 1279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hollis Hammonds, a multimedia artist who will be joining the faculty in the fall, presented several art projects. Photo by Justin Kling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pauldebevec.com\/\">Dr. Paul Debevec<\/a>, chief research officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eyelinestudios.com\/\">Eyeline Studios, powered by Netflix<\/a>, and research adjunct professor at the University of Southern California, presented his research projects in visual effects for film and media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He discussed his process for re-creating sodium vapor matting, which is a film technique used in the 1950s and 1960s that seamlessly combined actors and background footage on camera without additional editing. This process was used in such films as \u201cMary Poppins\u201d and Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s \u201cThe Birds,\u201d he said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lfQnjiSvxMA\">Dick Van Dyke dancing with the penguins<\/a> in \u2018Mary Poppins,\u2019 he is composited in there very well,\u201d Debevec said. \u201cHe was not in front of a green screen or a blue screen, but in front of a yellow screen \u2014 which is the yellow you get from a low-pressure sodium vapor lamp.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debevec said to re-create sodium vapor matting, he found sodium vapor lamps, then built lights and filters to execute the process on camera. Debevec later teamed up with the vlogging group \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@CorridorCrew\/featured\">Corridor-Crew<\/a>\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UQuIVsNzqDk&amp;t=10s\">re-created the process<\/a> in April 2024.
