{"id":20668,"date":"2024-05-07T15:32:10","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T20:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/?p=20668"},"modified":"2024-05-07T15:32:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T20:32:16","slug":"graduation-spotlight-syara-villarreal-performance-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/07\/graduation-spotlight-syara-villarreal-performance-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduation Spotlight: Syara Villarreal, Performance Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Syara Villarreal experienced a career moment just in time for graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The senior Performance Studies major directed her first musical \u2014 \u201cOrdinary Days\u201d by Adam Gwon \u2014 for her senior capstone project, calling it \u201ctruly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPutting on a musical is no easy task, and I couldn\u2019t have done it without my incredible cast and crew, who helped bring my vision to life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is set to graduate Friday with a Bachelor of Arts degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/academics\/disciplines\/performance-studies\/\">Performance Studies<\/a>. Villarreal will also be honored as a distinguished student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/\">School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts<\/a>\u2019 Graduation Recognition Ceremony earlier in the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villarreal said she is honored to be selected for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWatching Performance Studies and the School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts grow and develop throughout my time at A&amp;M has been incredibly fulfilling,\u201d she said. \u201cI have enjoyed every second of my time as a student.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" src=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Syara-cast-1024x717.jpg\" alt=\"Syara cast\" class=\"wp-image-20666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Syara-cast-1024x717.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Syara-cast-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Syara-cast-768x538.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pvfa.tamu.edu\/app\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Syara-cast.jpg 1112w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The &#8220;Ordinary Days&#8221; cast and crew, back row from left: Robert Rutherford (music director\/pianist), Grace Lunsford, Caleb Simmons and Syara Villarreal (director). Front row: Lizzete Velez and Colton Neuville.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOrdinary Days\u201d was performed in late April in the Black Box Theater in the Liberal Arts and Arts and Humanities Building, with a four-person cast and a music director\/pianist. The story follows four people who live in New York City and go through life\u2019s challenges together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working on the musical for over a year, Villarreal said she had ample time to generate ideas, which fueled her excitement to bring them to rehearsals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was privileged to work with an extraordinary cast who eagerly contributed to bringing these concepts to life,\u201d she said. \u201cWitnessing these characters evolve from paper to vibrant personalities right before my eyes was undeniably my favorite aspect of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fall, Villarreal will pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre with a specialization in directing at the University of South Dakota. For her first show in the fall, she will be assistant director for &#8220;The Wolves&#8221; by Sarah DeLappe, under the primary direction of Chaya Gordon-Bland, associate theatre professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled to begin taking classes under the esteemed faculty, and be in a practice-based program where I will be immersed in theatre year-round,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is a three-year program, and each year I will get to direct one show of the theatre season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villarreal said the most rewarding part of her time at Texas A&amp;M was the friendships and relationships she made with Performance Studies students and faculty members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts brought me lifelong friendships and support systems that I will value throughout my career and life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Top photo by Laura McKenzie.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syara Villarreal experienced a career moment just in time for graduation.
