Students To Collaborate With Army Band In Free Concerts Celebrating United States’ 250th Anniversary
“Fort Sam’s Own” 323d Army Band will perform at Rudder Auditorium Sept. 28-29 with contributions by Music, Theatre and Visualization students.
The Texas A&M University College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts will celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary with two free concert events featuring “Fort Sam’s Own” 323d Army Band from Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The band will collaborate with Music, Theatre and Visualization students for the concerts on Sept. 28-29 at Rudder Auditorium.
“Sounding the Republic: America’s 250th” is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts through its national initiative honoring America’s semiquincentennial.

“Commemorating America’s 250th milestone through ‘Sounding the Republic’ highlights the deep connection between artistic excellence, education and public service,” said Rebecca Hays, D.M.A., associate professor for the Music Performance program. “This fall, our students will have the rare privilege of working side-by-side with premier military specialists to honor this historic occasion. As our performing artists and theatre narrators prepare to dive into the musical and narrative scores, and our Visualization students gear up to work alongside the Army band’s media production team, everyone is eager to bring this milestone collaboration to life.”
‘Rock, Pop and Beyond!’

“Rock, Pop and Beyond!” is a small ensemble showcase with students in the Music program performing with the Brass Band and Rock Band of “Fort Sam’s Own” 323d Army Band.

The full “Fort Sam’s Own” 323d Army Band will perform alongside students in the Music program for selected works. An immersive display of visuals created by Visualization students will be projected, tracing the evolution of American military band music from the 18th century to the present day. Theatre students will narrate to provide context for the musical selections.
“Sounding the Republic” explores the lasting influence of military music through a repertoire of historical, ceremonial and contemporary works. The program addresses how military musicians have inspired generations, strengthened communities and contributed to the cultural identity of the United States for more than two centuries.
Additional invitation-only educational and community programs will take place in Rudder Auditorium and Rudder Forum on Sept. 28-29.
