Lyle Lovett will be joined by Leland Sklar and Chuck Ainlay for a free screening and discussion of the documentary “Immediate Family,” on April 14 from 7:15 to 10 p.m. at Geren Auditorium in the Langford Architecture Center, Building B. The event is part of Lovett’s Hagler Fellow residency with the College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts.
The 2022 film showcases four legendary session musicians — Sklar, Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel and Waddy Wachtel — who performed and recorded hit songs with artists including James Taylor, Keith Richards, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Stevie Nicks and Jackson Browne.
“Immediate Family” was directed by Danny Tedesco, who helmed another acclaimed documentary about studio musicians, 2008’s “The Wrecking Crew.”
Sklar, a renowned bassist and session musician, is also a longtime member of Lovett’s Large Band and Acoustic Group.
Together with Kortchmar, Kunkle and Craig Doerge, Sklar played in Taylor’s backing band as the singer-songwriter rose to fame in the 1970s, and the musicians became known as “The Section.” Among the many hit albums Sklar contributed to: King’s Grammy-winning “Tapestry” in 1971, Browne’s self-titled debut in 1972 and Phil Collins’ “No Jacket Required” in 1985.
With more than 250,000 subscribers, Sklar’s active YouTube channel features his musings on music and his adventures on the road. In 2020, he released a book titled “Everybody Loves Me,” featuring photos of famous friends making a hand gesture toward him that seemingly opposes the book title.
Ainlay is a Grammy-winning producer/engineer who has worked with George Strait, Emmylou Harris, The Chicks, Mark Knopfler, Peter Frampton, Taylor Swift, Lionel Richie and Sheryl Crow. He produced Lovett’s “12th of June” album, released in 2022, and also engineered “Lyle Lovett and His Large Band” in 1989.
The Nashville-based Ainlay has earned 10 ACM Awards. His four Grammy wins were for best surround sound album (Dire Straits’ 20th anniversary edition of “Brothers in Arms” in 2005); best pop instrumental album (Peter Frampton’s “Fingerprints” in 2006); and best country album (George Strait’s “Troubadour” in 2008 and Miranda Lambert’s “Platinum” in 2014).
