Filmmaker Anne Rapp joined Lyle Lovett on April 7 for a screening and discussion of the 1999 film “Cookie’s Fortune” at Geren Auditorium.
Rapp wrote the screenplay for director Robert Altman, and Lovett appeared in the film alongside Glenn Close, Julianne Moore, Patricia Neal, Charles S. Dutton, Liv Tyler, Courtney B. Vance, Chris O’Donnell and Ned Beatty.
Performance and Visual Studies faculty members Daniel Humphrey and Aurore Spiers led the Q&A portion. Rapp and Lovett discussed Altman’s approach to the film score, improvising on set and emphasizing collaboration.
“Altman hired you if he really liked what you did,” Rapp said. “It was a joy to write and a joy to make. If I can bring somebody a laugh that makes me feel good, and that’s why I wrote a movie like this one.”
“Altman creates a community when he does a film,” Lovett said. “He was such a great judge of character. All of his films seemed to be about getting people to be real by poking holes in the pretense.”
Join us April 14 for the next event in Lovett’s Hagler Fellow residency: a screening and discussion of “Immediate Family,” a 2022 documentary by Danny Tedesco. It showcases legendary session musicians Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel and Waddy Wachtel, who recorded hit songs with artists including James Taylor, Keith Richards, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Stevie Nicks and Jackson Browne.
Lovett will be joined by Grammy-winning producer/engineer Chuck Ainlay, and by Sklar, renowned bassist and session musician who is a longtime member of Lovett’s Large Band and Acoustic Group.
The free event starts at 7:15 p.m. at Geren Auditorium in the Langford Architecture Center, Building B.
