Eric Gibson, a visiting assistant professor in the School of Music and director of opera theatre at Ohio State University, visited with students in the Music program this week.
In a voice studio class taught by Jason Mallory, D.M.A., instructional associate professor, Gibson worked with students on their opera arias for the upcoming show “A Little Magic Flute,” a shortened version of “The Magic Flute.” The students will perform it as part of the Crescendo showcase on April 8 at 2 p.m. in the Black Box Theater in the Liberal Arts and Arts & Humanities Building.
Gibson, who specializes in vocal performance and dramatic acting, has directed “The Magic Flute,” and his 2019 production of it earned first prize in the National Opera Association’s Opera Competition.
“Eric worked with students on the singing, acting, embodiment and interpretation of their songs,” Mallory said. “He challenged the students to know and enjoy their characters’ storytelling through their songs. He has directed this show many times over and his expertise was most appreciated.”
