Singer-Songwriter Lyle Lovett Begins Hagler Fellowship By Working With Students In Music Program

Students in the College of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts are learning from one of Texas A&M’s most recognizable graduates this semester.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett, Class of ’79, is working with our students and faculty as a Hagler Fellow.

Hagler Fellows are honored for outstanding achievements in their field, and work with faculty and students during their yearlong appointments. The institute will induct its 11 Hagler Fellows and two Distinguished Lecturers during its annual gala in February.

Lovett visited multiple classes this week in the Music program, sharing his insight on songwriting, playing guitar and developing a distinctive voice. Several students performed original songs during these classes, and Lovett did the same with performances of “Don’t Cry a Tear” and “If I Had a Boat,” along with Townes Van Zandt’s “If I Needed You.”

“Don’t depend on the audience to determine how you feel about the song,” Lovett told the students. “Think about how you feel. If it’s good enough for you, it will find an audience.”
