SUMMARY:Graduate Student Artist Residency Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Nik Aberle\, a second-year Master of Fine Arts in Visualization student\, earned the inaugural Graduate Student Artist Residency — a partnership between the college and the Arts Center of Brazos Valley — and worked on his research throughout the semester. His installation features a red laser that visualizes sound waves from a speaker\, which is driven by the movements of people in the room. When people move and change positions\, five distance sensors cause the sounds that animate the laser to change. As more people enter the space and interact with the sensors\, the more active the laser pattern becomes. Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Arts Center will be closed for the holidays Dec. 21 through Jan. 4.

SUMMARY:Hollis Hammonds\, 'The River Entered My Home By Hammonds + West'
DESCRIPTION:“The River Entered My Home by Hammonds + West” will be on display Jan. 16 through April 19 at Art League Houston. Photo courtesy of Hollis Hammonds. On display Jan. 16 through April 19 at Art League Houston\, 1953 Montrose Boulevard in Houston. Artist talk Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.  This multimedia exhibition about climate grief and the environmental crisis was created by Hollis Hammonds\, associate professor in the Visualization program; and Austin-based poet Sasha West. The artists combine image and text into multimedia installations and exhibitions\, combining sound with sculptural installation\, video with drawings and words with images. Hammonds’ drawings reflect the melancholy and darkness manifested in West’s poems\, asking viewers to reexamine the impact of elements when those elements are fed by human actions. West’s poems connect to the landscapes of ruin in Hammonds’ drawing\, questioning our culture’s belief in limitless growth. They invite viewers to see their own daily part in making the physical world and the future of landscapes.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Chiles\, 'Making Meadows'
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Chiles\, “Meadow no. 03.” Image courtesy of the artist.Jan. 27-March 5 at Wright Gallery\, Langford Architecture Center\, Building A. Artist talk and reception Feb. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. “Making Meadows” is an art exhibition of Elizabeth Chiles’ photographic collage works featuring grass\, wildflowers and insects\, with abstraction and shifts between figure and ground. The Austin-based artist’s process involves photographing nature during her daily walks and composing the collage works digitally. The artist explores her ideas surrounding how meadows are formed through collaboration of insects and humans. The artist describes the exhibition as “an experimental laboratory that begins with the questions: How are meadows\, both literal and metaphorical\, made? What is at stake in these places of abundance\, dreams and rest? Where do they persist and germinate?” Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
